I Saw Someone Cheating... What Can I Do?

Anonymity

One of the first questions a student often asks about reporting a peer that cheated is "can I be anonymous?" Even though the Aggie Honor Code states that Aggies do not tolerate anyone who lies, cheats or steals, it is sometimes very difficult for a student to openly step forward as a witness of academic misconduct against a fellow student or friend.

It is possible to report an academic misconduct violation and indicate that you wish to remain "anonymous" using the online reporting system. In this case, "anonymous" means that the Aggie Honor System Office will not share your name or any other identifying information with anyone outside the office, especially the course instructor or the alleged violator. However, an AHSO Case Manager or the AHSO Director may contact you to get more details, mainly to determine if you know of any evidence that would document the violation.

In the case of an anonymous student filing a report of academic misconduct, we generally follow up with the course instructor on the nature of the academic misconduct and the name of the alleged violator. It will then be the instructor's responsibility to check the student's past work or monitor future activities in order to gather evidence of a violation and file a subsequent documented violation report with AHSO.

Reports filed openly (without requesting anonymity) by a student will be routed into the Honor Council Investigation Process to determine if enough evidence is available to move to an Honor Council Hearing.

Filing a Violation Report

You can submit a violation report to the Aggie Honor System Office using Report a Violation Link available on all Aggie Honor System (AHSO) web pages.

You will be required to login using your NetID and password to access the form. You will be asked for the following information to enter into the form.

  • Date violation occurred
  • Date violation discovered
  • Subject, Course Number, Section Number
  • Student UIN and Student Last Name (will authenticate and fill in the remainder of the student information)
  • Any other individuals responsible for the course (if applicable)
  • Type of Violation (see Descriptions of Academic Misconduct for more information
  • A brief description of the violation dates, location, facts, witnesses, etc. (less than 3000 characters)
  • Whether you wish the report to be kept confidential and your name as anonymous

Other Options

Alternately, if the person is in the same class as you are or you know the instructor, you can go directly to the instructor and let this person know so they can follow up on collecting evidence and reporting it through the Aggie Honor System Office.
